During a recent visit to my brother’s house in Arizona, my mom was treated to a new love – Belgian Liege Waffles. Now, we didn’t grow up as frequent waffle makers and connoisseurs, but Liege Waffles were something to truly be desired.
My mom couldn’t get her mind off of those yummy waffles, so when I had a business trip to Salt Lake City, Utah, my mom told me to keep an eye out for the Liege Waffle Truck. I guess it’s a thing in Utah. We didn’t find the truck, but we did find an excellent waffle shop downtown. That is where Keith and I got to try our first Belgian Liege Waffles. We were in love! You can eat them with fruit topping, nutella, bananas, you name it! These are not your ordinary waffles.
After Keith and I came home and raved about the waffles to my mom, she continued to daydream about these bites of heaven. She posted on Facebook about needing to make Liege Waffles and how my brother was to blame for this new addiction. So, for Mother’s Day, my brother had Pearl Sugar (one of the key ingredients, which can be purchased on Amazon) shipped to my mom. Now that we know what Pearl Sugar is, we pretty much call it crack sugar. So good!
Now there were no excuses. She then purchasedĀ a cast aluminum Nordic Ware Stove Top Belgian Waffler on Amazon, to aid in the creation of our new favorite treat. These are currently half off, at just $36.32.
Now with the proper ingredients and kitchen tools, there was nothing holding us back from whipping up our very own Belgian Liege Waffles. This is a little more work than regular waffles, but oh so worth it! Top with flavored whipped cream, nutella, fruit, etc. The waffles are your oyster. Yum! Yum! Yum! I hope you’ll join us in this waffle making adventure.
To make this recipe, you’ll need Pearl Sugar, and you can purchase it here!
Ingredients
- 1 pkg dry yeast
- 2 cups warm milk
- 4 eggs, separated
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup butter, melted
- 1/2 cup Belgian Pearl sugar
Instructions
- Dissolve yeast in milk; stir to dissolve.
- Beat egg yolks and add to yeast mixture, along with vanilla.
- Stir flour and salt into yeast mixture, and mix till well combined. Stir in melted butter.
- In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff; carefully fold into batter. Cover bowl with a dish towel and let stand in a warm place about 45 min, or until double in bulk.
- After dough has doubled, gently stir in the Pearl Sugar, and then cook.
- For best results, use a stove top Belgian Waffler, as an electric one will cook to quickly, not allowing the sugar pearls to melt and crystallize.
- For Stove Top Waffler, preheat on both sides for 2 min. Spray with non-stick spray. Pour 1 cup of batter on waffler, then cook on one side for 1 min, flip waffler and cook on the other side for 2 min - medium high heat. Be careful to not have heat too high, or sugar will burn.
